Adam Fuss (English, born 1961) Untitled [Photogram of Snake Tracks In Powder] 1997  Gelatin silver print (68 3/4 x 51 7/16in.)
For this work, Fuss let loose half a dozen snakes on a large sheet of photographic paper dusted with a fine coating of talcum powder. Over time, as the paper was exposed to light, the movement of the snakes “drew” the image by more or less delicately shifting the powder into fan- and swag-shaped forms.

The process used to make this photo is incredible!

I couldn’t sleep last night so I did some more work in my studio and was brave enough to take pictures of my mess.  I started a bunch of small experiments to loosen me up and get me back to the place where I am surprised by the work again.

#tbt Detail from an oil and acrylic painting from many years ago. I’m going to hang it in my future baby’s room whenever that time comes.

The results of this experiment.  Not bad,  but could be better.  Round two coming soon.

I’m digitally adding some vibrant colors to my triptych to see which direction I should go in next since it’s easy to rub off previous layers of an ink painting if you overwork it.

After trying to document this painting inside and contending with uneven lighting and terrible shadows I turned to the lessons I learned as an art student.
It is best to use natural lighting to document your work.

Last summer at this time I was preparing for a solo show at the River Gallery in Chelsea, MI. After that I participated in ArtPrize in Grand Rapids. ArtPrize had set up a wonderful opportunity for artists to meet with pointed individuals in the art world. I was able to get a meeting with Dana Friis-Hansen, the director of the GRAM (Grand Rapids Art Museum). I showed him my smaller works and he was a fan and then he came to the UICA and saw my installation and my larger works. Fast forward to a couple months ago… I received an e-mail from Dana’s lovely assistant director, Cindy to set up a studio visit.

Today she drove 2 hours to come see my work. I understood that she was coming to maybe pick out a piece or two for a group show in the museum and I was so thrilled to be able to be part of a show at the GRAM. What ended up actually happening….? I was given a solo show in the GRAM! I can’t wait to take over a shiny new space at the GRAM! I’m going to let my imagination go wild and go mess up my newly cleaned studio now…
